Effect of Creep in the Fundamental Frequency and Stability of a Slender Wooden Column of Composite Section

Since wood is a viscoelastic material, creep is a possibility in wooden structures. Creep will alter the strictly elastic parameters defined in initial wood characterization tests because its behaviour is influenced by the material’s rheology, even at constant stress levels. Models in which the immediate elastic deformation is increased by a viscous deformation, resulting in a temporal function, can be used to describe creep mathematically. As a result, the reducing effects of stiffness, both axial force and creep, should be included in the measurement of the normal frequency of vibration and the stability verification of a slender column. The first can be considered via the geometrical part, and the second by introducing a variable elasticity modulus over time, obtained in relation to the chosen rheological model, into the traditional portion. To test the aforementioned aspects, a numerical simulation was performed using a rheological model with three parameters for the variation of the elasticity modulus, with a bar compressed by a force at the free end equal to 10% of the Euler critical force, plus its own weight. The findings show 60 percent and 50% variations in frequency and elasticity modulus, respectively, in addition to describing the precise moment of column collapse in the event of non-observance.
