Recent Studies on Molecular Characterization and Selection of Cassava Varietes Resistant to Xanthomonas axonopodis PV. Manihotis in Cote D’ivoire

Morpho-Molecular and symptomatic characterizations of Xanthomonas axonopodis PV strains. In Côte D’ivoire, Manihotis. Cassava is the second post-yam food crop in Côte d’Ivoire, with an approximate yield of 2.8 million tonnes per year. However, the cultivation of cassava suffers from many constraints which restrict its productivity. Bacterial blight from cassava caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Manihotis is toxic to Côte d’Ivoire’s cassava crops. In order to better understand the pathogen, 800 isolates were obtained in six of the seven agroecological zones from cassava-diseased leaves and stems (AEZ). In each isolate, bacterial colonies show typical Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. The morphological features of Manihotis were subjected to molecular analysis. The susceptibility of eight cassava varieties was assessed under natural infestation conditions in Ferkessédougou on the basis of the number of leaves affected by the disease. The results showed morphological colonies, ivory-white, smooth, shiny, convex, with normal outline, non-stinky and viscous appearance, after 48 hours of incubation. A single band profile of about 900 bp characteristic of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv was demonstrated by PCR amplification of the DNA. From Manihotis. Of the eight varieties tested, only the improved “Bocou 2” and “Yavo” varieties were the least affected. About Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Of instance, manihotis is the causal agent of the spots, burns and diebacks found in Côte d’Ivoire’s cassava varieties. The ‘Bocou 2’ and ‘Yavo’ varieties can therefore be recommended to producers in areas where cassava bacterial blight is more rampant. At the end of this study, compelling results emerged, but for better disease control, the virulent strains are also to be identified for good varietal selection.
