Gender Representation in Notable Children’s Picture Books: 1995–1999

Although females comprise 51% of the population, they’re represented in but that quantity in children’s literature. Psychologists and leaders of liberation groups affirm that gender stereotyping in children’s books has detrimental effects on children’s perception of women’s roles. Therefore, illustrated children’s books that view women positively are often used to eliminate these stereotypes. Eighty-three Notable Books for kids from 1995 to 1999 were analyzed for gender of main character, illustrations, and title. This research updated LaDow’s content analysis method and revealed that contrary to earlier studies, steps toward equity have advanced supported the increase in females represented because the most character (S. LaDow, 1979). [1]

Television and gender representation.

As the hottest mass entertainment and knowledge medium, television is seen potentially as a robust source of socialization capable of cultivating its own Weltanschauung among mass publics. However, television has also been accused of presenting a distorted view of the earth manifested within the disproportionate over-representation of certain demographic groups, professions and institutions, and thus the under-representation of others. Despite their numerical presence within the population, research has revealed that girls tend to be grossly under-represented on television altogether areas of programming. Still a Man’s Game: Gender Representation in Online Reviews of Video Games

Despite the rising popularity of video games, the majority of the medium’s audience continues to be male. One reason could even be that character representations in video games are geared toward male players. This content analysis used video game reviews from a heavily trafficked internet site to research the prevalence and portrayal of male and female video game characters. consistent with the findings of previous studies, female characters were found to be underrepresented and proportionally more often sexualized as compared to their male counterparts. additionally to those findings, the study’s innovative method-the use of online video game reviews as an indirect measure of video game content-shows promise as a tool for future content analyses of video games. Steps to improve gender diversity in coastal geoscience and engineering

Robust data are rock bottom of effective gender diversity policy. Evidence shows that gender inequality remains pervasive in science, technology, engineering and arithmetic (STEM). Coastal geoscience and engineering (CGE) encompasses professionals working on coastal processes, integrating expertise across physics, geomorphology, engineering, planning and management. The article presents novel results of gender inequality and experiences of gender bias in CGE, and proposes practical steps to affect it. It analyses the gender representation in 9 societies, 25 journals, and 10 conferences in CGE and establishes that girls represent 30% of the international CGE community, yet there’s under-representation in prestige roles like journal editorial board members (15% women) and conference organisers (18% women). [4]

A Survey of Gender Representation in Social Studies Textbooks of Ethiopian Primary Schools

This study was an attempt to research and analyze gender representation in second cycle (grade 5-8) primary schools Social Studies textbooks. For this purpose, four Social Studies textbooks which are in use in grades 5, 6, 7, and eight were investigated thoroughly. The content analysis method was employed. The results revealed that there is no fair representation of females and males in some gender related characteristics. The supremacy of males over females was observed in terms of names. [5]
