A Study on Compositional Approach to Designing FCC High-Entropy Alloys that Have an Enlarged Equiaxed Zone

In this research, a compositional approach to the design of alloys with an expanded equiaxed zone is proposed. A directional solidification quenching experiment verified the partitioning of elements during the solidification of high-entropy alloy (HEA) CoCrFeMnNi. By considering factors including solvent enrichment at the columnar front and the melting temperatures and thermal conductivities of the individual elements, several HEAs were intended to optimise the effects of constitutional and thermal undercooling. It was shown that the newly designed HEAs have successfully extended equiaxed zones and enhanced anisotropic properties. The expanded equiaxed zone contributes to the pilot-scale V15 HEA’s moderated anisotropy. The creation of new HEA castings containing high proportions of the equiaxed zone could support this approach to alloy design.
