Evaluation and Assessment of the Effects of Moderating Factors of Entrepreneurial Orientation on the Performance of SMEs in Tanzania

This chapter assesses the impact on the efficiency of SMEs in Tanzania of the Moderating Factors of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO). According to the literature, EO refers to the process of strategy making that provides the basis for entrepreneurial decisions and behaviour for organisations. Innovativeness, proactivity, risk taking, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy are the aspects of EO. There has been a strong awareness of the need for businesses to practise EO. In less developed countries such as Tanzania, where the growth rate of small and medium-sized enterprises is very low, the subject matter has not been fully exploited in order for enterprises to cope with and understand the effects of EO on the performance of enterprises, particularly SMEs. Several moderating factors, such as cultural orientation and organisational structure (internal factors), social economic factors and political and legal factors (external factors) contribute to the applicability of EOs, hence the success of small and medium-sized enterprises, according to literature. The section concludes that the moderating factors influence the output of small and medium-sized enterprises.
