Study on the Livestock Keepers’ Perception on East Coast Fever-Immunization (ECFiM) in Kajiado Central, Kenya

The study was conducted in Kajiado County to obtain knowledge on the understanding of East Coast Fever disease and its vaccine use by livestock keepers. East Coast fever (ECF) is a significant constraint on the production of livestock, ranking among those of high economic significance. The main objective of the research was to understand the understanding of the East Coast Fever Immunization vaccines (ECFiM) by the livestock keepers. A survey of 88 households, fifteen focus groups with livestock keepers, main informant interviews and a workshop were used to collect the data. The type of livestock owned by the group and their preference; 37.5% of cattle, 28% of sheep. Prioritized diseases of livestock: ECF 42.5 percent 25 percent FMD. ECFiM-vaccines data sources were ranked 26.25 percent as Kenya Agricultural Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) employees and 16.25 percent as veterinarians. The County Government should formulate policies that improve the working relationship between (KALRO) in order to train farmers on the use of the ECFiM vaccine, as agriculture is a devolved activity. The county government needs to connect farmers with financial institutions where they can have access to loans to buy the vaccine.
