Advanced Study on Comprehensive CFD Simulation of the Ladle Cycle toward Lining Service Life Optimization

In order to move molten steel from a steel making furnace to a continuous casting unit, refractory-lined ladles are used in steel mills. The aim of this study is to optimise the ladle cycle to increase the service life of the liner. A deeper understanding of the lining thermal conditions during the varying stages of the ladle cycle via a mathematical simulation of the process will accomplish this optimization. To predict the ladle lining and steel shell temperature during the full ladle cycle, a 2D axisymmetric mathematical model was developed. The calculated steel shell temperature of a freshly lined ladle during the drying and preheating process was in good agreement with the literature and expectations of the factory. The model’s capacity to predict the lining temperature background during the ladle cycle has been shown in this present work. This strength will be used to increase the service life of the ladle lining and strengthen the cycle procedure. To decrease the irregular lining temperature variance, this study suggests making some improvements in the current ladle cycle procedure. It is also recommended to upgrade the preheating burners for adequate drying/preheating of the lining. This will then increase the service life of the liner and reduce the rate of refractory consumption.
