The relative antioxidant activities, against radicals generated in the aqueous phase, of a range of plant-derived polyphenolic flavonoids, constituents of fruit, vegetables, tea and wine, have been assessed.
Antioxidant activities of carotenes and xanthophylls
The purpose of this study was to assess the relative antioxidant activities of a range of carotenes and xanthophylls through the extent of their abilities to scavenge the ABTS·+ radical cation.
Antioxidant activities of buckwheat extracts
The antioxidant activities of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Möench) extracts were evaluated and compared with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) using a β-carotene bleaching assay, a 2,2-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay and the Rancimat method.
Microbial and Antioxidant Activities of Some Common Spices from Southeast Nigeria
The aim of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Piper guineense, Xylopia aethiopica, Tetrapleura tetraptera, Monodora myristica Njameja. The total phenol contents and antioxidant activities of the indigenous spice extracts were determined using Folin-Ciocalteau´s reagent; ABTS (2,2´-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulponic acid) diammonium salt; DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). Phenolic content of the spices was correlated with the anti-oxidant properties. Antimicrobial properties of some of the spices against known food spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms were also determined.
Phytochemical Constituents and Antioxidant Activities in Leaves of 14 Breeding Lines of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz)
Two (2) month-old leaves of fourteen (14) breeding lines of cassava, consisting of five (5) parental lines and nine hybrids, were evaluated for their phytochemical constituents. The objective of the study was to determine total flavonoid, phenolic and antioxidant activity in the leaves of the breeding lines. The 14 breeding lines were grown in the research farm of the Biotechnology and nuclear Agriculture Research Institute between March and September 2011. Analyses were carried
