Localized Intracoronary Gamma-Radiation Therapy to Inhibit the Recurrence of Restenosis after Stenting

Although the frequency of restenosis after coronary angioplasty is reduced by stenting, when restenosis develops within a stent, the risk of subsequent restenosis is greater than 50 percent. We report on a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial of intracoronary radiation therapy for the treatment of in-stent restenosis. [1]

Accumulation of Mn(II) in Deinococcus radiodurans Facilitates Gamma-Radiation Resistance

Deinococcus radiodurans is extremely resistant to ionizing radiation. How this bacterium can grow under chronic γ radiation [50 grays (Gy) per hour] or recover from acute doses greater than 10 kGy is unknown.  We show that D. radiodurans accumulates very high intracellular manganese and low iron levels compared with radiation-sensitive bacteria and that resistance exhibits a concentration-dependent response to manganous chloride [Mn(II)]. Among the most radiation-resistant bacterial groups reported, Deinococcus, Enterococcus, Lactobacillus, and cyanobacteria accumulate Mn(II). [2]

Effect of Gravity on Gamma Radiation

Recoil-free resonant absorption of the 14.4-keV γ ray in Fe57 has been employed to measure the effect of gravity over a 75-ft vertical path in the Jefferson Laboratory, in an improved version of the experiment of Pound and Rebka. A Co57 source, initially 1.25 Ci, large-windowed proportional counters, and an enriched absorber foil 15 in. in diameter permitted a much increased counting rate.[3]

Effect of Gamma Radiation in Undoped SnO2 Thin Films

This paper was reported on study the effect of gamma radiation on nanoporous SnO2 electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells. Structural, optical and electrical properties were studied. The refractive index was decreased with the increase in gamma radiation. The resistivity of thin films was decreased about 40% with the increase of gamma radiation at 659 nm film thicknesses. The mobility and carrier concentration were increased with the increase of gamma dose at 659 nm film thickness. [4]

Computation of Radiation Risk Parameters Due to Gamma Radiation Doses from Some Rivers within Oil Producing Communities of Abia State, Nigeria

Oil production involves the extraction of petroleum, gas and produced water, with some associated natural radionuclides from the sub-surface which could enhance background ionization radiation. This study presents the radiological analyses and computation of radiation risk parameters due to gamma radiation doses from some water samples collected from some oil producing communities in Abia State, Nigeria. [5]
